LAUSD has refused to participate in a community forum give parents information about what will be in the sex education materials in K-12 public schools. LAUSD representatives told the group of parents, who support responsible sex education and parental rights, that LAUSD is “too busy” and "doesn’t have the money to host parent meetings at this time."
The law requires parents be notified when Comprehensive Sex Ed instruction will take place and "the notice must advise parents/guardians that the written and audiovisual educational materials used in the comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education course are available for inspection (emphasis added)." But after LAUSD cancelled a series of informational meetings, a group of parents and community members decided to host a local forum to bring public awareness to the curriculum.
“How can I – or any parent – say that we approve or disapprove of the sex ed. program without seeing what is being taught?” asked Abby Bailes, mother of four LAUSD students and event organizer.
Parents asked Town Hall meeting on the subject, the LA City Department of Neighborhood Empowerment distributed a memo and an email warning neighborhood councils against spending public money to promote the Sat. Feb. 29th event.
Therefore, it is up to YOU to tell your friends, family, coworkers, as well as the parents of your child's teammates and youth groups what is happening in ALL CA public schools. As we have discussed in blog posts here and here, the CA Health Education Framework and the list of "approved" sex education curricula which school districts have to choose from to comply with the CA Healthy Youth Act PROMOTE early sexual behavior, embrace anti-science ideology and aggressively target religious instruction for marginalization and bullying.
