This sentence is from an article about how the Nigerians are preparing for the return of those 276 kidnapped girls. So, first, let me say, I 100% fully understand and sympathize with the INTENTIONS of the statement. Everyone is thinking, "How can we help these traumatized girls put this horrific event behind them and try to restore normality?!"
And I really do appreciate that carrying the fetus of the rapist to term seems like torture few could imagine. Every day she remembers she is pregnant by her captors. Every day she imagines that face... I get it.
But it's not the same as being "branded" or "tattooed" by the rapist. Yes, those would be scars, and dreadful reminders of what happened... but they are not LIFE.
Before you attack me, hear me out.
But are the babies who are perhaps growing inside those innocent girls any different? They are innocent too. If abortion is the "after-care solution," then those babies will also be stripped of their humanity, dignity and value. They too will be terrified, hoping against hope that their moms and dads will rescue them.
In the end, the terrorists will have perpetrated evil far beyond their individual acts. They will have transformed the kidnapped girls into terrorists as well. People who tortured and killed innocent children, just like their captors did. How is this a "solution"?
I don't have a one-size-fits-all action step. The truth is there are no quick fixes -- especially in light of the Sudanese woman, Meriam Ibrahim, who is about to be executed for "converting" to Christianity. Under Sha'ria law, even though she was raised as a Christian from childhood, the father who abandoned her was a Muslim, making her Muslim at birth. With this twisted thinking, the babies of the kidnapped girls will also be "Muslim" at birth -- what might happen to THEM?
I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I do know where there is LIFE there is HOPE. I know that a child who could survive in spite of this nightmare of horrors, is one who would earn the right to be heard. Wouldn't we listen to such a voice?
