Some parents think they don't "need" to attend the Porn-Resistant Brain workshops because they have the latest porn blocking software. This is my response: Trusting porn-blocking software on every digital device is similar to wearing a bulletproof vest while you are home, but taking it off when you step out on the battlefield of life. Even if you commit to wearing your vest everywhere, there will be times when it is too hot, too heavy or too uncomfortable. Inevitably,
you will minimize or underestimate the danger and take it off.
And besides, a bulletproof vest only overs the vital organs. You can still bleed out if you are shot in the leg, right? There is porn just waiting to slither in through media not yet invented, and activities not yet imagined. Never forget, the porn industry is stalking our kids.
I fully appreciate its uncomfortable to discuss pornography, what it is and what it does. For many people "the sex talk" is awkward and embarrassing. I totally get that! So please let us help you!!! Our talks are engaging, and practical. We make it Real without Fear-Mongering. And even this talk is going to advance our primary goal: We want everyone to experience HAPPILY FAITHFULLY IN FOREVER WITH GREAT SEX!
Here are the FAQs:
There are four dates in four locations, are they all the same event or four different classes?
The four events are all the same. We chose four venues to make it convenient for the communities where Positively Waiting serves the most.
What age range is appropriate?
We will not be showing graphic imagery, but it is a mature subject. Our general guideline is children 13 and up, but if you also have younger children (10-12), they are probably hearing discussions or seeing things your older children know about. Use your best judgment. This is NOT the way to introduce children younger than 10 to the topic. It would be better for you to attend without them and have a discussion on your own.
I'm already aware my teen looks at porn. Is this going to fix him/her?
Sorry, no. Breaking free from a porn addiction is similar to any other addiction. We will have recommendations and referrals for those resources, but that will not be our focus. Our objective for these workshops is prevention: how porn affects the brain and decreases the chances for successful relationships.
I think porn can be beneficial for adult relationships. Are you anti-porn, out to censor people's free speech?
Not our job. This isn't about sexual politics, it's about the physiological, emotional, spiritual and relational impact of internet pornography on adolescent development. There are enough longitudinal studies to indicate porn has unexpected negative consequences on teens. If they don't know, they can't protect themselves.
Will this be religious indoctrination?
Our objective is to provide information and tools, some of which are spiritual. If that prevention tool won't work for you, you can be confidant there will be others that will. There are no doctrinal prerequisites for attending.
Will there be childcare available?
Two of the venues (Granada Hills and Arcadia) will provide childcare if you register for it in advance. If you attend one of the events NOT offering childcare (Santa Clarita & Lynwood), please be aware small children cannot stay in the room with you. This is as much for their protection as it is for the adults in attendance who may not feel comfortable asking questions with little ears listening.
Will there be a Spanish translator?
Yes, all the events will be in English and Spanish.
